Roy Rodriguez told me his group had good succes on the boat trip on the Rio Frio that runs behind the Bocatoma Restaurant, seeing the Sungrebe and other cool stuff. I have heard of birders doing this boat trip but had never done it myself so Tony and I were down there first thing in the morning. Along the way we had this cooperative Blue-crowned Monmot.
One of the first birds we saw was this Linneated Woodpecker.
Follwed by this Amazon Kingfisher.
Manuel the boatman only charged us 200 pesos for an hour on the river. There were plenty of Ringed and Green Kinfishers and Lousiana Waterthrushes alonmg the way.
Manuel seemed to know where all the birds were and soon found the Sungrebe, AKA "El Patito", for us. Trouble was we didn't see it till it flushed and then it was hard to get a good look. I managed this poor picture.
Other cool citizens of the Rio Frio included this Boat-billed Heron that refused to show his fat beak.
And this coy Bare-throated Tiger-Heron.
After the boat trip we high-tailed it back to the good ol' USA. I set Tony off for Arizona thia morning. Hopefully it will be sooner that another fifteen years before we get to go birding again.
