Birdy day at Frontera Audubon, 5/3/16

The strong cold front continued to blow in over night so I figured Frontera Audubon would be the place to be.  I was right!  Six hours netted 76 species including 15 species of warblers.  One of the first birds was this Black-billed Cuckoo, my second of the spring.  It's eating a caterpillar as cuckoos often do, but this cat packs a sting.

The water feature in the orchard was packed with warblers lined up for a bath.  Here's a few of them, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green, Tennessee and Black-and-white Warblers.

Blackburnian Warblers are appearing in good numbers this year.  This one may have bitten off more than he can chew.

Plenty of American Redstarts today.

Yellow and Wilson's Warblers.

My first Hidalgo County Magnolia Warbler for the year.  They seem a little late this spring.

And then I found a couple of good ones, Mourning and Golden-winged Warblers.  Good birds but poor photos.

And then a shot of a hidden Northern Waterthrush.

A Yellow-breasted Chat was squawking as they often do in the spring.

But there were other colorful birds besides warblers like this Scarlet Tanager.

Female Painted Bunting.

Shorebirds are hard to find at Frontera with limited wetlands but the occasional Solitary Sandpiper is seen.

Broad-winged Hawks are still passing through.

Even a late Peregrine zoomed overhead.

All in all, one of my best days at Frontera.
