Well this May has pretty much sucked for migrants at our Progreso Lakes yard. In the past May has been our best month for warblers but not so much this year. Anyway last Saturday was World Migratory Bird Day and being that I got a few warblers the day befor I had my hopes up that I could run up a good yard list. I did get Tennessee and Magnolia Warblers.
But I could not find the Chestnut-sided Warbler that popped in the day before.
I've had Eastern Wood-Pewee almost daily.
But I couldn't get Friday's Alder Flycatcher to show.
Every year I have a few Groove-billed Anis pass through the yard. But this spring we have pair working on a nest in our bottlebrush tree. Great to have this prehistoric looking cuckoo as a member of our yard's avifauna.
An Eastern Screech-Owl has been calling every day but I had not been able to find it. But while chasing the Magnolia Warbler around the yard I came face to face with it.
So here at Progreso Lakes, World Migratory Bird Day was a bit of a dud. A little earlier in the spring would help but the annual day is the second Saturday in May which is great for those eBirders up north at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.
