Progreso Lakes, 5/3/20

Been waiting a long time for an Ovenbird to grace our yard at Progreso Lakes.  They like a shady open understory which we don't have.  But I guess our little native brush patch was enough to bring one in.  I got a few poor shots and didn't chase after the Ovenbird hoping it would eventually show at the bird bath.  But yard bird #227 didn't return.

Despite being hot and windy, birds dropped in through out the day.  This Magnolia Warbler was one of eight warblers species seen today.

Was glad to get a better look at a Bay-breasted Warbler.  Glimpsed one a few days ago.

First Chestnut-sided Warbler for our bird bath.

Black-throated Green Warbler.

Yellow Warbler is probably our must abundant migrant warbler.  They also respond best to pishing.

Back in October I heard a loud repetitive "speet" call over my head in the big yellow poinciana.  I could never find the bird but recognized the call as that of an Acadian Flycatcher.  So based on that somewhat flimsy evidence, I put it on our yard list.  However Yellow-bellied Flycatcher has a very similar call in migration.  But Acadian migrates later than Yellow-bellied so that was my justification.  Well today an Acadian Flycatcher landed in the big ficus next to the porch and posed for photos making me feel a lot better.  Now we have a legit Acadian Flycatcher for our yard.

Young male Summer Tanager enjoying the bird bath.

As did a couple of Painted Buntings.

We've had several Rose-breasted Grosbeaks this spring.

Saw the Purple Gallinule again last night but didn't get a photo.  Not much happening along the water.  Here's a Spotted Sandpiper and a Diamond-backed Watersnake.
